Most people associate action film stars with incredible physique, good-looking and tall stature. The megastar Mark Wahlberg is everything but tall. At only 5’8″, the actor of some of the most famous movies such as Italian Job, Three Kings and Ted, is below the average of what you would call an ideal height for a movie star.
His wife even remarked that he thought Wahlberg was around 6’ 4 when they met in 2001. According to her, the star looks taller on screen.
Born in 1971, Mark Wahlberg is the youngest among his siblings. His father Donald Wahlberg Sr. was a delivery driver while his mother was a bank clerk.
Growing up in the Southern part of Boston, Mark Wahlberg had a troubled youth and often had several run-ins with the law. He at one time had a cocaine addiction and involved in petty crimes. Wahlberg was at one time charged with attempted murder and still holds a felony record.
After serving time in jail for about 45 days, Mark turned around his life. He was the founding member of New Kids on the Block and even took private education to kick-start his new life as a reformed individual. Mark also joined a boy band that rocketed him to fame in the world of music.
When the band fell apart, Mark Wahlberg took up the moniker of Marky Mark and set on a solo music career that was quite successful at first. At the same time, he modeled for Calvin Klein, and it was what catapulted him to the world of acting.
Acting and Producing
He ditched his music career after the magazine Rolling Stone voted him the “Worst male singer of the year,” and took up full-time acting.
Mark Wahlberg proved his acting prowess with a role in the 1996 thriller, Fear. He cemented his place with a role in Boogie Nights.
The megastar is credited for making the movie, Fighter, possible. Many of the directors and actors had walked out until he worked hard to convince them. He worked with Freddie Roach to perfect his role in the movie and even tried his best to persuade Christian Bale to play the role of his brother. The role earned Bale an Oscar.
Apart from being a megastar in acting, Mark is now producing several TV series and movies. Among the most popular include Ballers, How to make it in America, Entourage, The Gambler, Boardwalk Empire, and Lone Survivor.
Mark had stated his intention to retire by the age of 40 to focus on raising his children, and his game of golf. However, Mark has not yet retired, and he jokes that it is because his game of golf is terrible.
His 9/11 Escape
Together with a few of his friends, Mark Wahlberg was scheduled to take flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles. He changed his mind and instead used a private jet to attend a film festival in Canada. Plane 11 hit the World Trade Centre.
Working Out and other Hobbies
When Mark is not at the restaurant he co-owns with his brother, or pursuing other projects; he works out. The megastar loves to work out so much that he has a nutritional supplement company.
Interestingly, Mark has a 2500 square foot private gym with a boxing ring in it. To underscore is passion in working out, the movie star trained for four years to build up an incredible physique for the role in “The Fighter.” Manny Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach was his trainer for the part.
His other passion is cricket, and even co-owns a cricket Team in the Caribbean Premier League. It is called the Barbados Tridents.
Mark has an $8 million mansion in Beverly Hills, which he transformed to his liking. Apart from the gym and boxing ring, the villa also has a Waterpark and a big basketball court, as well as, a theatre.
Despite his tumultuous childhood, Mark Wahlberg is now a reformed man, living a happy and sober family life. He credits his turnaround to his various charitable organizations that seek to reform the life of children and prevent them from following the same path that he did.
Mark has two daughters and two sons from his marriage to Rhea Durham. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that he received 2010.
